pages with letters there are, and that you kan choose a number of a page to
go to it.
It must show a bit like this

Prevous page (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) next page <-- this if you are on page 2 or
whits one you want..
It must happend with this script:

distinct count with multiple partitions?

We analyze much of our data using distinct measures. Some of the underlying sources - i.e. daily page views are heavy and have millions of rows a day. Because of this I've created daily partitions to only process the incremental data that's arrived. However, I'm curious - how does distinct count perform when it needs to rollup over multiple partitions?

IE Say it's Dec 25th, and I have 25 unique partitions for each day of December thus far. Internally, how do the distinct measures correctly accumulate the unique instances of my measure? Are there any significant performance concerns to be aware of?Distinct Count measure will work fine with multiple partitions. AS keeps the distinct count values inside the partitions, and therefore it can correctly aggregate across them. Partition per day should be OK too.|||Arjun: Make sure you are on at least SQL 2005 SP1 QFE rollup, preferably SP2 CTP2. There were a couple of bugs fixed for distinct count measures over multiple partitions.|||Good to know, thanks! Jeff, do you have any details on the nature of the issues with distinct counts over multiple partitions?

Displaying Total number of Rows in a Report in Page Header.

Hi,

I have requirement to display Total number of Rows in a Report in Page Header.

I have written the following code in Page header it shows RowCount for the Page only.

=Count(ReportItems!textboxInTableCell.Value)

Can anyone please help on this?

Regards

Raghav

By Total number of reports in the report do you mean the number of rows returned by the Dataset query? If so, add a textbox in your Report Body with the expression =CountRows("DataSet1") with the name of your Dataset in place of DataSet1.

Then refer to this textbox directly in the Page Header.

This should give you the total row count for your Dataset.

Thanks aayush,

I used =CountRows() in body header and set the RepeatWith property to "tableName" and it works as Page header.

Displaying select results on the page

I have the following select statement on my page:

 <asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:prbc_hrConnectionString %>" SelectCommand="SELECT emp_lname +', ' + emp_fname + ' ' + emp_minitial + '.' AS emp_fullname FROM employee WHERE (emp_username = @.emp_username)"> <SelectParameters> <asp:SessionParameter Name="emp_username" SessionField="Username" Type="String" /> </SelectParameters>

I want to say

"Welcome, emp_fullname"

at the top of the page, but can't figure out how to write the results to the page. I am moving to ASP.NET 2.0 from PHP and am banging my head against the wall trying to figure out how to do these little things.

I appreciate any help you can give.

I am assuming that you don't want to use the sql membership/profile system, and want to implement your own. You should read more about those to see if they would be a better fit for you, as both do a lot of things automatically for you already.

However, to solve your immediate problem, since the sqldatasource will return a set of records, you must use a control that knows how to handle multiple records and iterate through them. Those controls would be things like formview, detailsview, datarepeater, datalist, and gridview (I'm sure I missed a few). I'll show you how to use the datarepeater.

Drop the datarepeater on your form. Change the DataSourceID to SqlDatasource1. Switch to the source view, and add an item template with what you want to display for each record (In your case, only 1). So something like this should be in your .aspx file:

<asp:RepeaterID="Repeater1"runat="server"DataSourceID="SqlDatasource1">

<ItemTemplate><%# Eval("Username") %></ItemTemplate>

</asp:Repeater>

You can do the same thing similarly using a datalist. Drop datalist control on your page, assign the datasource. Refresh the schema. Edit item template, which should already contain a couple labels.

With that said, what I would probably do if I needed to display the username like that (Possibly across multiple pages), I would assign another session variable to hold the emp_fullname. Then on any page you wanted to display it, drop a label on it, and programmatically set the label contents during page load like:

label1.text=Session("emp_fullname").

Since the emp_fullname shouldn't change during a session, and is probably used on multiple pages, then you only need to hit the database when they first log in. It's much more efficient than hitting it every time. Although you could enable the sqldatasource's caching to help with that as well, it's still much more work for asp.net to instantiate a sqldatasource, databind it to a data control, etc.

If you still want to use the sqldatasource control (because you'd like to enable caching, etc), then you can also programmatically retrieve the dataset in page_load and set a label as well. I believe the syntax would be similiar to (This might not run/be syntaxically 100% correct):

if not ispostback() then

dim dsv as datasourceview=sqldatasource1.select(datasourcearguements.empty)

label1.text=dsv.ToTable.Rows(0).Column(0)

end if

The .ToTable.Rows(0).Column(0) I'm not really sure about, but you can access it, just probably not exactly that way.

Displaying reports in the form of graphs over web

Hi,

I have a requirement to show reports(in the form of graphs) over the web page. The reports get the data from the database. Right now I'm using GDI+ to render the graphs over the web. I want to know if there are any significant advantages of using sql server reporting services over GDI+ ?

Can I draw any kind of complex graphs using the reporting services or is there a limitation on the kind of graphs that can be drawn?

Does GDI+ have better flexibility in terms of drawing graphs or reporting service can help achieve the same thing?

Thanks much in advance.

Drawing graphs yourself will always provide you with more flexibility than using a pre-built solution. The question is: do you need this much flexibility? In most cases, the answer is no; but only you can answer that. SSRS gives you a lot. I wouldn't dare say it handles every scenario, but I haven't seen a requirement that can't be met with what SSRS provides. If you've ever used the charting in Excel, you can think of this as a somewhat similar feature-set. Honestly, tho, I'd just take the hour to create a simple report. You'll see how easy it is and what options you're given fairly quickly. Additionally, you can check out theAsp.net videos; specifically, the SQL Server 2005 Express section has two videos you might be interested in:#10 Getting Started with Reporting Services and#11 Building and Customizing Reports in Business Intelligence Development Studio.

|||

Thank you so much for the information. I got just what I needed. I need to generate graphs similar to those generated using Excel.

Reporting services seems to be the better option then. Thanks once again.

|||Glad to be able to help! A lot of people hesitate to dig into SSRS because they're worried it'll be complicated. Once you start, tho, you realize just how easy it is to get up and running. Admittedly, SSRS isn't going to solve every problem and there can be some annoying work-arounds when you start to reach more advanced reports, but it's a fantastic 80-90% solution. Best of luck with it!|||

Swetha.c,

I found a solution that has an interface that looks similar to Microsoft Excel. It is a product called AutoTag made by Windward Reports. They have an ASP.NET Engine that can run the reports you generate from AutoTag. Check it out, might be what you are looking for.

Displaying Parent / Child / Grandchild data

I am working on an ASP.NET site to display information about authors and books. I'm working on the Author page right now and I'm having trouble getting it to display the data I want.

I'm trying to do everything with declarative controls and as little code-behind as possible.

I have a datasource on the main page that selects the Author data and provides this to a FormView. Inside the FormView is another datasource that takes the AuthorID as a parameter and selects the list of books, which is provided to a DataList.

Inside the DataList I display some limited Book information. I also want to display some child items of the Book (grandchildren of the author), for example other authors who contributed to that book, or alternative titles. I have tried using datasources in each DataList row with a parameter set to the BookID, and it works just great, but the response time is just not acceptable. Each datasource of possible several dozen is making its own call to the database and it's just too slow.

If I use code I can grab all the data in one operation and use relations in the DataBinding event (I believe) to select the data I want, but this is a bit cumbersome and I expect will cause trouble if I want to eventually use an ObjectDataSource.

Incidentally, on a display-only page I use the XMLDataSource and it works great, but I need read-write access on the Edit page.

Is there a good way to do what I'm trying to do?

Thanks,

Graham

Here's an alternative:

Instead of putting the books in a datalist you could put them in a gridview. Handle the row selected event of the gridview and programatically bind only the 'grandchild' details specific to the selected book.

That's probably what I'll end up doing, but I'm trying to avoid code as much as possible. In code it's pretty simple to avoid many trips to the database when fetching information, at the cost of some added complexity. I'm just looking to see if there's an equivalent way to do that declaratively.

It would be nice if you could bind to a datasource, specify a data member, and also throw in some selection criteria - filter it at the bound control, not at the datasource level. That's similar to what you can do with the XMLDataSource and XPathSelect.

|||

Yeah I see what you're saying.I've never managed to getsomething like that working entirely declaratively though with asp.netcontrols. Even so, if you just do the grandchild stuff programaticallyit should only be a couple of lines of code.

You could take a look at some third party grid controls made by ComponentArt, Infragistics, Telerik etc.

displaying one data record

Hi all, this is a very basic question of diplaying a data.
on my aspx page I have datasource that will return only ONE record.

<asp:SqlDataSource ID="sdsCategoryName" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:KaruselaConnectionString%>"
SelectCommand="SELECT Title FROM tbh_Categories WHERE CategoryID=@.categoryID ">
<SelectParameters>
<asp:QueryStringParameter DefaultValue="-1" Name="CategoryID" QueryStringField="id" Type="int32"/>
</SelectParameters>
</asp:SqlDataSource>

on the server side I would like to manipulate the title of the page according to the data returned from the query:

and on the behind code

if (!this.IsPostBack && !string.IsNullOrEmpty(this.Request.QueryString["ID"])) { DataView dv2 = (DataView)sdsCategoryName.Select(arg);this.Title =string.Format(this.Title, dv2.Table.Columns[0].ToString()); dv2.Dispose(); }

of course it doesn't work. my question is this. do we really have to put the query datasource on the client side?
and secondly, how can I view the recorsd I recieves from the query?
Thanks for the help.

on yours code behind file write this code>>>>

add namespace

System.Data.SqlClient;

and on load event write

SqlConnection sqlconn = new SqlConnection("yourconnectionstring");

SqlCommand sqlcomd=new SqlCommad("SELECT Title FROM tbh_Categories WHERE CategoryID=@.categoryID ",sqlconn);

sqlcomd.CommandType= CommandType.Text;

sqlcomd.Parameter.Add(new SqlParameter("@.catergoryID") ,SqlDbType.NChar ,10);

sqlcomd.Parameter["@.categoryID"].Value = Request.QueryString["ID"];

SqlDataAdapter myadp = new SqlDataAdapter(sqlcomd);

DataTable dt = new DataTable();
myadp.Fill(dt);

Label1.Text= dt.Rows[0].ItemArray.GetValue (0).ToString ();

underline. Right click, properties, advanced properties, navigation, jump to
URL. Put in the URL.
If you want to have it open in another window (and you have sp1 or sp2
installed) then put in an expression:

displaying null fields

i have a query that gets orders made, visits to the page, and revenue produced for each day in a month and country we ship to.

when there are no visits to the page, then there are no orders and no revenue is produces, so those fields are null. However, instead of displaying a row with the date and country and null values for the rest, the query just skips those rows entirely.

is there anyway to get what I want either using crystal or the sql (i.e, a list of every day in the month with the specific info for that day, regardless if it's null (cause i can always replace the null values with something else))?

P.S. it's an Oracle DBCan you post your SQL and the selection formula?
Do you really mean that you have data whose values are NULL or are you, for example, joining to an orders table and the lack of orders means there is no join so there is no data?|||I think istead of Inner join, you need to use Left outer Join

Displaying Header on each page

I am new to Report Services. CurrentlyI have mulitple pages of
information returned from my query and I would like to know if it is
possible to display the header information at the top of each page as
it is called by the user. At the moment it will only be present on the
first page.
Any help would be much appreciated.
IvanSimplest way is to incorporate your header info into the data region
(table, matrix, etc.) of your report.
Good luck and good reporting!!|||If it is group header that you want repeated you can click the end of a row
that has the group and then in the properties window you will see the option
to repeat on new page and you can set it to true.

Displaying data on a new page

Hi,
I am trying to display data on a new page when one field contains
specific data.
Once this data is read I wish for any following information to be
displayed on the next page. Any help would be much appreciated.
IvanHere is an example of a Jump to URL link I use. This causes Excel to come up
with the data in a separate window:
="javascript:void(window.open('" & Globals!ReportServerUrl &
"?/SomeFolder/SomeReport&ParamName=" & Parameters!ParamName.Value &
"&rs:Format=CSV&rc:Encoding=ASCII','_blank'))"
If you don't want to have it appear in a new window then do this in jump to
URL:
=Globals!ReportServerUrl & "?/SomeFolder/SomeReport&ParamName=" &
Parameters!ParamName.Value & "&rs:Format=CSV&rc:Encoding=ASCII"
Note in your case you would use Fields!Fieldname.value instead. Also, if you
want html just leave off the format and encoding part. RS defaults to HTML.
You need at least RS 2000 SP1 or greater for the above to work.

Displaying data of a cube over web hangs up server

Hi!

Can someone give me a clue in such problem?

I have published my cube in WEB to be available for other users (using save as web page in Excel). There are no problems while everyone uses Excel or export the file from WEB to MS Office Excel. But if we use web interface and try to get data, Analysis Server hangs up. It does not happening with the same cubes if they are located on local computer, so I don't think the problem is in cube. And I realy need web interface to get data from cube.

Should I reconsider another way to publish cubes in web or check some other things?

I am currently building a class library that uses ADOMD and MDX to bring back data in a DataTable. We then send the user over to Microsoft Reporting Services (reports run off the same MDX) to display graphs and give them export options. I have not had it hang up on me though.|||

Hi,

Are you publishing the web page (saved excel page) in a web server?

If so, what credentials are being passed from IIS/web server to analysis server ?

check if that credentials have permissions in Analysis Server.

check if you have allowed interactivity while creating the excel web page?

Next use sql profiler, to find out if the request is coming thru to the analysis server.

if the request itself is not coming, it means there is some connectivity, permissions or credentials issue.

if the request is coming to analysis server, then you can debug from there on....

hope this helps

Hi again!

I am assure that there is all right with connectivity and permissions. The strangest thing is that previously everything worked quite well. The problem is new with previously published cubes (which worked prpperly in web interface for a long time). The problem showed up just in past week after installing SP2 on server.

Hi,

Can you open SQL profiler and find out whats happening?

we can get more details to debug this problem from there.

I should ask for this one our administrator, but I doubt it. In that case, where could I get the download?

Displaying data across the page rather than down

Hi All

I am currently working on a report where the data needs to be displayed across the width of the page rather than repeating as you go down the page. Is this possible using a table or would I need to go about it another way?

Thanks

Look at the Horizontal Tables example in Chris Hays' blog http://blogs.msdn.com/chrishays/archive/2004/07/23/HorizontalTables.aspx

Displaying CustomerID in the report header on mutliple pages

Hi everybody,
I would like to have a field (CustomerID) that is displayed in the header of
the page. I can reference a field of the page with
ReportItems!CustomerID.Value. This works fine as long the customer
information is not spanned across two different pages.
If this is the case the field in the header is empty on the second page. Is
there another solution to this? Why can't I just reference a field item?
Thanks,
tomIf you have any control in the Header of a report , then
by default the controls are repeated in all pages.
There is a Report Header property where you can set print
on first page and print on last page to true or false.
If you have "Print on Last Page " set to false and if 2nd
page is your last page then you will not see the header on
the second page.
Just see if this is the case with your report.

Displaying Blob Image from db

I'm trying to retrieve an image that I have stored in a SQL Server db, and display it in an .aspx page. It's supposed to retrieve just one image, according to a unique key that's passed. However, when I view the page, nothing appears... just the Internet Explorer missing image placeholder.
I've tried code from several diff tutorials, and can't seem to get it to work.
I'm aware that some people think it's not a good idea to store images in a db, but I have to in this case, since the requirements for this project are that the images are stored in the database. I already know how to store references to file paths of images located in a server folder. I've just never done it this way... storing the whole images in the database. The table has 3 columns, one for the id, "FileType" stores the image type, and the "ImageBinary" is the image itself.
If anyone can shine some light on why my code doesn't display anything, I'd greatly appreciated your help.

Private Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load

Dim myConnection As New SqlConnection(ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("strConn"))
Response.Write("Page Loaded") 'This is just for testing to see if the page loads at all

myConnection.Open()

Response.ContentType = DR.Item("FileType")
Response.BinaryWrite(DR("ImageBinary"))
Else
Response.Write("no image found")
End If
myConnection.Close()
Response.Write("<br>Image successfully retrieved!")
Catch SQLexc As SqlException
Response.Write("Read Failed : " & SQLexc.ToString())
End Try
End Sub

Documentation for datareader and blogs goes like this.

Displaying Aggregate Values in Header on every page

Hi all.
Product: SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services Service Pack
I am trying to display a calculated field in the Page Header for every page.
I have tried the suggestions written, but the textbox only appears on the
Page Header on the last page of the report.
For example, textbox29 in the body of my report is:
=First(Fields!Next_2_Years.Value, "AnalysisCngEECSalary")
In the Page Header, I just display the textbox:
=ReportItems!textbox29.value
The result only appears on the last page of the report. How can this result
appear on every page of the report? I tried using RepeatWith, but that did
nothing. Please help. Thanks.

in the report layout that will grow to multiple pages at runtime. You could
set the RepeatWith value of textbox29 to the name of that particular data
region that expands over many pages - also try putting textbox29 right next
to that data region. The value should then repeat on all these pages and
will be available in the page header/footer also. BTW: you could set the
textbox29 Visibility to be always hidden - the value will still show up in
the page header/footer, but it will be hidden in the report body.

I tried putting textbox29 next to table1 with the repeatwith option pointing
to table1 and this time the value of textbox29 only appears on this first
page. I tried putting textbox29 before table1 and the value still only
appears on the first page. The textbox value is not repeating with the table
that is spanning multiple pages.

the report body is only supported for physical page oriented renderers (such
as PDF), but at this point not for interactive renderers such as HTML.
I assume the textbox is sitting parallel to the table (not above and not
below). The correct value of that textbox should still be available in the
page header/footer.

I am looking at the Preview page within the Designer. As you suggested, I
put the textbox next to the table and the textbox value is available on the
Page Header of the first page. The textbox value does not repeat on
subsequent page headers.
